UMW Men’s Basketball Downs St. Mary’s, 87-57, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team downed St. Mary's College, 87-57, on Saturday afternoon in their Capital Athletic Conference opener in Ron Rosner Arena. Freshman Trey Barber led the Eagles with 22 points on 9-13 shooting, while also hauling in seven rebounds and blocking four shots.

Barber started out the game strong as he scored eight of the Eagles' first 11 points. Because of that, UMW found themselves ahead 11-2 in the first 3:45 of the game. With the score at 16-10, the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to go up 24-10 with 8:39 to play in the half. Greg Rowson and Drew Johnson both knocked down three-pointers while Ra'Shawn Cook scooped home a layup.

A Barber layup and two free throws from Rowson put UMW up 32-15 with 4:29 left. Johnson gave UMW their largest lead of the first half at 20, 43-23, as he drained a three-pointer with just two-seconds left on an assist by Anias Saunders.

After the two teams traded buckets, Da'Shawn Cook made a jump shot to up the Eagles' lead to 21, 52-31. Riley Welch knocked down a jumper that put the score at 62-34 with 13:07 to play. Wayne Clevert got in on the action and buried a three-pointer on an assist from Welch to keep the Eagles up 35, 72-37 with 10:12 remaining.

UMW turned on cruise control from there as they controlled the game and never let the Seahawks get within 28 points for the rest of the game. R. Cook scored a few buckets to up his total on the day to eight points and Brendan Shaver closed out the scoring on a layup with 27 seconds left to seal the game.

Rowson scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting and also pulled down seven rebounds, to go along with four steals. Johnson recorded double digits as he scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting from three-point range. Welch added 10 points off the bench on 4-5 shooting.

The Eagles shot 35-61 (57.4%) from the field, 11-24 (45.8%) from three-point range, and 6-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line on the day. The Eagles out-rebounded the Seahawks 37-29 and dished out 24 assists.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Salisbury for a game at 7 p.m.
