UMW Men's Basketball Falls to Susquehanna 87-64, on Sunday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to Susquehanna 87-64, on Sunday afternoon in the Sponaugle New Years Tournament in Lancaster, Pa. The Eagles fall to 8-5 on the season.

The Eagles started the first half with a three-point basket by Junior Drew Johnson. The Riverhawks responded with a 3-pointer of their own but the Eagles quickly brought the game to a tie with a layup by Junior Riley Welch. The Riverhawks gained the lead but Junior Wayne Clevert was able to bring the score to 11-10 after a three-point basket. From here the Riverhawks found momentum and maintained the lead going into halftime.

Johnson got the Eagles back on the board with another three-pointer at the start of the second half. Welch added 2 points after two free throws and converted on two more free throws to bring the score to 65-34. After a pair of free throws was made by the Riverhawks, Welch knocked down another pair of free throws followed by a 3-pointer. A layup by Clevert followed by a layup by Sophomore Ra'Shawn Cook in the final seconds ended the game with a score of 87-64.

The Eagles shot 32-70 (45.7%) from the field, 16-35 (45.7%) from three-point range, and 7-13 (53.8%) from the free throw line. Welch led the Eagles with 18 points while Cook added 12 points. Junior Anias Saunders dished out 5 assists. 

The Eagles will play in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00pm.
