UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at Pacific (Ore.), 98-93, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Pacific University of Oregon, 98-93, on Wednesday evening in Forest Grove, Ore. The Eagles slip to 7-4 on the season. Freshman Trey Barber led the team with 27 points on 12-15 shooting from the field. 

In a wild up-and-down game, Barber got the Eagles out to a fast start as he scored the first six points of the game to give UMW a 6-3 advantage just 58 seconds in. Riley Welch knocked down a three-pointer with 16:20 to put the Eagles up 13-5. The Boxers went on a run over the next four minutes to pull within one, 20-19.

Anias Saunders scooped home a layup to extend the Eagles' lead to five, 28-23, with just under nine minutes to play in the half. Pacific kept the game close with their full-court pressure and tied the game up at 30-30 on a three-pointer. 

With the score at 39-37, the Eagles broke the press three straight times and after a Drew Johnson three-pointer UMW found themselves up 46-37 with 1:46 remaining. The Boxers closed the half on a 5-0 run and the Eagles held a 46-42 lead at the break. 

Barber led the Eagles with 20 points on 10-12 shooting from the floor in the first half. 

UMW came out of the half with two straight three-pointers, one from Johnson and one from Da'Shawn Cook to put the Eagles up 10, 52-42. After another three-pointer from Johnson to put UMW up 60-49, the Boxers went on an 11-0 run to tie the game up with 13:16 to play.

With the game tied at 70, Cook drained a three-pointer on an assist from Johnson to put the Eagles up three with 10:19 remaining. A layup from Johnson grew UMW's lead to five, 78-73, with 6:55 remaining in the game. Pacific then went on a 14-2 run that put them up 87-80 with just 3:45 left. 

Cook knocked down two free throws with 2:14 remaining to get within five, 90-85. Barber pulled UMW within three, 92-89, as he made a free throw with just 32 seconds left. The Boxers closed out the game from there to win 98-93.

Welch chipped in 18 points on 6-10 shooting, including 3-6 from three-point range. Johnson added 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Rowson and Saunders both had 11 points a piece. 

UMW shot 36-71 (50.7%) from the field, 10-27 (37.0%) from three-point range, and 11-14 (78.6%) from the free throw line.

The Eagles will continue their west coast trip with a game at George Fox tomorrow night at 7 p.m. PST.
