UMW Men’s Basketball Falls to York, 69-62, in CAC Semifinals

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to York College, 69-62, in the CAC semifinals on Thursday evening in York, PA. Freshman Greg Rowson led the team with 18 points. The Eagles are now 18-9.

Rowson got the scoring started in the game as he knocked down a three-pointer after a steal and an assist from Johnny Cronin just 39 seconds into the game. York made back-to-back three pointers to take a 6-3 lead, but Mark Madison made a jumper and Rowson nailed another three-pointer to go back up 8-6 with 15:49 to play. 

The Spartans retook the lead at the 13:35 mark and grew it to four, 16-12, with 12:19 to go. UMW held York scoreless over the next five minutes and went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with 7:13 left in the half. UMW grew their lead to five, 27-22, with 5:12 to play after Da'Shawn Cook knocked down a three-pointer on a screen from Cronin. 

York went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead and make the score 29-27. Jacob Williams scooped home a layup with 1:53 left to put an end to the run, but the Spartans made two three-pointers before the half to take a 35-29 lead. 

York began the second half with a layup but the Eagles then went on a 9-0 run to take a 38-37 lead with 17:27 to play. Rowson, Mark Madison, and Cronin all contributed points in that run. UMW maintained that one point lead with 13:02 to play as Riley Welch made a three-pointer to put the score at 46-45. 

The Spartans took a five point lead, 54-49, as they made back-to-back three-pointers with 9:49 to play. York kept a six point lead, 60-54, with 6:36 to play. Rowson then made two three-pointers in a row to tie the game at 60 a piece with 2:15 remaining in the game. York then scooped home two layups to go up 64-60. 

Williams rushed down the court and then made a layup with 42 seconds left to cut it to two, 62-60. The Spartans knocked down a three-pointer with 13 seconds to take a five point lead and after a UMW miss, made two free throws to seal the game 69-62. 

Cronin added 13 points and eight rebounds. Cook, Williams, and Johnson all contributed six points.
