UMW Men’s Basketball Drops 87-77 Decision to Frostburg St. in CAC Opener

The University of Mary Washington dropped a 87-77 decision to Frostburg St. University in the CAC opener on Wednesday evening in Frostburg, Md. The Eagles slip to 8-4 overall, and 0-1 in the CAC. Rowson led the team with 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. 

In the early going, FSU got out to an 8-2 start. The Eagles then scored eight straight points to take a 10-8 lead with 16:10 remaining. Da'Shawn Cook knocked down two three-pointers in that run. After those two big runs from both sides, both teams kept the game close as no team led by more than four. After the Bobcats regained the lead, Rowson made two free throws and Cook made another three-pointer to go up 19-16 with 13 to play.

Rowson made a layup to keep the Eagles up two points, 25-23, with 8:31 remaining. After FSU retook the lead 29-26, Mark Madison and Drew Johnson both scooped home layups to go up one, 30-29. Jacob Williams stretched UMW's lead to 36-32 with 3:23 to play. The Bobcats closed the half on an 11-3 run to take a 43-39 lead.

FSU extended their lead to nine, 48-39, as they scored the first five points out of the break. A.J. Robinson got UMW on the board in the second half as he knocked down a three-pointer 2:40 in. The Bobcats went up 13, 57-44, on a layup with 14:56 to play. After being down 11, 61-50, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to pull within just five points with just under 10 minutes to play. Williams, Cronin, and Johnson all made layups in that run.

With 6:47 to go, Rowson made a tough layup to put UMW down just four points, 65-61. From there, the Bobcats went on a 12-0 run to extend their lead to 77-61 with 4:18 to go. UMW got back in the game as they reeled off seven straight points and get within nine, 77-68, with 2:26 to go. FSU held on from there to secure the win.

Cronin finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds. Williams scored 11 points, while Robinson and Johnson each added 10 points a piece. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they will welcome CNU into the Anderson Center with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
