The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Washington & Lee University, 94-78, on Monday night in Lexington, VA. The Eagles drop their first game of the season and are now 3-1. Khiorie Stewart led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points and Riley Welch scored 11 points on 4-5 shooting from the field.
The two teams played at a very fast pace in the first half as they scored a combined total of 93 points. In the first 1:25 of the game, the Generals got out to a 6-2 lead. Washington & Lee then went on a 10-4 run to take a 16-6 lead with 16:04 to play. Greg Rowson drained a three-pointer and then Welch made a layup to put an end to that run and cut the lead to five, 16-11. Over the next three minutes of play, the two teams played even but the Eagles cut the lead to four, 20-16, on a Welch three-pointer.
The Generals then pushed their lead to 27-18, with 10:31 in the first half after a made free throw. After a Mark Madison made layup Washington & Lee stretched their lead to 13, 37-24, with 7:21 to play. UMW then went on an 8-0 run that was sparked by four points from Da'Shawn Cook, a made jumper by Stewart and a layup from Tyler Withers to put the game at 37-32 with 4:50 remaining in the first half. Over the last 4:50, the Generals extended their lead to 13 and the Eagles were down 53-40 at half.
Cook started out the second half with a made layup to cut it to 11, but the Generals answered and went on a 11-0 run to go up 22, 64-42. A Jacob Williams made free throw with 12:33 to play brought the Eagles back within 17, 66-49. Washington & Lee gained their biggest lead of the night at 28, 84-56, with 7:15 to play. The Eagles didn't quit till the end as they cut it 16 before the game was over thanks to a couple three-pointers by Stewart and another three-pointer from Welch.
Johnny Cronin scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Eagles had 11 steals and 14 assists.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to Lynchburg to play in the Wayne Proffit Classic with a tip-off set for 6 p.m.
