Shaw’s 23 Points Leads UMW Men’s Basketball to 71-60 Win Over Marymount on Senior Day

Senior forward Eric Shaw scored 23 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team past Marymount, 71-60 on Saturday afternoon in Ron Rosner Arena. Shaw also recorded his 500th rebound in his career. The Eagles improve to 18-7 overall, and 12-6 in the CAC.

Johnny Cronin got the scoring started as he made a layup 24 seconds in. The two teams traded baskets and at 18:09 the score was tied 4-4. Cronin added another layup with 14:48 left to put UMW up 8-4. Shaw scored eight straight points for the Eagles and put them up 16-14 on a jump shot.

Tyler Withers knocked down a three-pointer with 7:08 left to push the Eagles lead to five, 19-14. The Saints then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead 20-19 with six minutes remaining.

UMW responded by going on a 7-0 run and taking back the lead 26-20. Mark Madison capped the scoring for the first half with a layup and the Eagles went into the half up 28-25.

Cronin came out in the second half ready to play as he scored three layups and also hit a free throw to score the first seven points for the Eagles and their lead grew to nine, 34-25. The Saints hit two-three pointers to cut into the lead and make it 34-31. Khiorie Stewart made a layup with 15:09 left in the game to put UMW up 43-34. 

The Saints tried to make a run at the lead as they got it to within five, but Shaw responded with a three-pointer to make it 46-38 with 13:58 left. Stewart pushed the lead to double digits, 53-43, as he made another layup with 9:24 remaining. 

Shaw threw down a thunderous dunk with 7:25 left to push the Eagles lead to 11, 59-48. Marymount again tried to make a run as they got within six this time, but A.J. Robinson buried a three-pointer with 5:12 left to go up 62-53. 

Shaw gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 71-56, with 1:46 remaining. Marymount scored some late buckets but UMW came out the winners 71-60.

Cronin scored 17 points while hauling in six rebounds and recording four steals. Stewart chipped in 13 points while Madison added seven points. 

UMW shot 43.8% (28-64) from the field, making 6-20 three-pointers, and 9-13 free throws. Marymount shot 46.7% (21-45) from the field, making 7-15 three-pointers, and 11-16 free throws. The Eagles dished out nine assists and recorded 15 steals. 

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. as they will host a first round CAC playoff game against Frostburg St.
