Cronin’s Big Night Lifts UMW Men’s Basketball Past Frostburg St., 81-70, on Thursday Night

Junior Johnny Cronin scored 23 points on 9-11 shooting, and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team past Frostburg St. University on Thursday night in Frostburg, Md. The Eagles improve to 17-5 overall, and 11-4 in the CAC. 

The Eagles got off to a slow start at the beginning as they did not score in the first 3:02 and were down 4-0. Cronin then managed to score seven points in a row and the Eagles were down 8-7 with 15:06 left in the first half. UMW tied the game up, 9-9, on a Mark Madison layup with 14:30 remaining.

Jacob Williams gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, 12-11, with 13:32 left on a steal and a layup. After a Madison layup, the Bobcats proceeded to go on a 9-0 run and take back the lead 20-14 with 10:42 remaining. UMW responded and went on a 7-2 run and they were down 22-21 with 7:21 left.

Cronin made a layup to regain the lead for the Eagles 25-24 with 4:39 left. Eric Shaw knocked down two free throws with 37 seconds left to give UMW a three point lead 33-30. After Frostburg St. tied it up, Madison scooped in a layup with three seconds left to give UMW a 35-33 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the teams traded baskets over the first 3:15 and the Eagles kept a two point lead, 37-35. With 14:17 left in the game, Frostburg St. took the lead, 43-41. Over the next 3:17, the two teams combined for seven lead changes with the last one being a layup from Madison to give UMW a 51-50 lead. 

The Eagles scored the next five points and pushed the lead to six, 56-50, with just under 10 minutes left to play. A dunk from Frostburg St. brought them within four, 61-57, with 8:06 remaining. Khiorie Stewart knocked down a jumper with 6:01 left to give UMW a 65-57 lead. 

A layup from Cronin pushed the UMW lead to 11, 72-61, with 2:39 left. Madison knocked down two free throws with 20 seconds left to give the Eagles their largest lead of the night at 13, 79-66. Drew Johnson knocked down two free throws with eleven seconds and UMW defeated Frostburg St. 81-70.

Madison scored 22 points on 9-15 shooting, while pulling in six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Jacob Williams scored 10 points, hauled in five rebounds and had five assists. Shaw also finished in double figures with 10 points. Tyler Michael led the Bobcats with 21 points.

UMW shot 51.7% (30-58) from the field, making 3-12 three-pointers, and 18-23 free throws. Frostburg St. shot 42.3% (30-71) from the field, making 4-21 three-pointers, and 6-9 free throws. 

UMW will travel to Wesley on Saturday afternoon for a tip-off set at 3 p.m.
