Shaw, Cronin Lead Offense as UMW Tops Southern Virginia, 65-48

Senior Eric Shaw scored 19 points, and junior Johnny Cronin added 14 points to go along with six rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team past Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night in Ron Rosner arena. The Eagles improve to 13-5 overall, and 7-4 in the CAC. 

In the early going, UMW got off to a hot start as they scored the first five points on a layup from Jacob Williams and three-pointer from A.J. Robinson just 2:03 into the game. Southern Virginia went on an 8-2 run over the next 3:44 to take the lead 8-7. UMW responded to their run and they went on one of their own as they scored eight straight to take back the lead 15-8 with 11 minutes left in the half.

Williams made two layups in a row and with 8:05 left in the half, UMW was up 11, 21-10. The Knights cut it to eight, 24-16, with 5:07 left. Over the next 3:09, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 17, 33-16. Cronin made a layup with seven-seconds left to put the Eagles up 37-18 going into halftime. Shaw led the Eagles with 10 points in the first half.

Over the first 3:37 of the second half the Eagles went on a 5-2 spurt to push the lead to 22, 42-20, on a Shaw three-pointer. The Knights made a free throw with 14:20 left in the game to cut it to 18, 44-26. Over the next 4:15, the two teams traded buckets and the Eagles were 49-30 with 10:05 to play.

The Knights cut it to 12, 51-39, with 6:18 left in the game. Shaw knocked down two free throws with 3:57 left to push the lead up to 14, 55-41. With 1:38 left in the game, Robinson nailed a three-pointer and put the Eagles up 20, 63-43. Freshman Tavion Britt capped the scoring for UMW with 56 seconds left to play, and the Eagles took home the win 65-48. 

Robinson went 4-8 from three-point range to score 12 points. Williams netted nine points and dished out seven assists. The Knights were led by Cale Thronton as he scored 16 points.

The Eagles shot 48.2% (27-56) from the field, making 5-17 three-pointers, and 6-12 free throws. The Knights shot 36.2% (17-47) from the field, making 2-17 three-pointers, and 12-19 free throws. UMW out rebounded SVU 34-32 and the Eagles dished out 13 assists.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Salisbury for a tip-off set at 4 p.m.
