VIDEO: ROBINSON SETS UP SHAW FOR DUNK IN TRANSITION

Senior John Lutkenhaus scored a game-high 20 points, while junior Eric Shaw scored 18 and sophomore Jacob Williams 15 to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to an 87-64 win over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 10-8 overall, and 6-5 in CAC play.

The Eagles shot 56.3% from the field in the first half, making 10-19 three point tries, in building a 20-point halftime lead. Lutkenhaus led the way with six three pointers in the half.

Shaw started the torrid perimeter shooting, connecting on his first two attempts, as the Eagles jumped out in front, 8-2. Lutkenhaus followed with a pair of threes, and Williams added a layup, as UMW built a 16-4 lead with 16:44 left in the half.

Another Lutkenhaus triple and a Williams bucket pushed the lead to 21-4, and an A.J. Robinson three and Shaw free throw grew the lead to 19, at 29-10 with 11:02 left. Robinson hit another three to keep the lead at 19, and a Shaw layup pushed the lead to 21, at 35-14 with 8:15 left.

Southern Va. cut the margin to 14, but Williams scored on a driving basket and Lutkenhaus hit yet another three to bring the lead to 43-24 with 4:43 left. UMW scored seven of the final nine points of the frame, with Lutkenhaus hitting his sixth three of the half. UMW led, 50-30, at halftime.

The teams traded points throughout the first eight minutes of the second half, but UMW upped the lead to 69-46 on a Brent Mahoney dunk, which followed a spectacular dunk from Shaw off a Robinson pass. Robinson hit another triple with 9:47 to go to raise the lead to 72-46.

Down the stretch the Knights would come no closer than 17 points, with Shaw answering with a three to end the visitor's hopes of a comeback.

Lutkenhaus ended with 20 points, shooting 7-9 from the field, including 6-8 on threes, and added six rebounds. Shaw shot 7-11 from the field, making all three of his three point attempts and adding eight rebounds. Williams went 7-10 from the floor, and added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

The Eagles shot 55.0% from the field (33-60), making 12-26 three point attempts and 9-11 free throws. Southern Va. shot 44.6% (25-56), making 4-17 three point tries and 10-15 free throw attempts.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
