John Lutkenhaus scored 24 points and pulled in nine boards to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 75-55 win over Frostburg State on Wednesday evening in the Ron Rosner arena, in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener. The Eagles improve to 4-1 on the season.

Frostburg jumped ahead early, 12-6, in the first 5:29 of action. The Eagles responded with seven straight points from Lutkenhaus to take a 13-12 lead. The Eagles added to their lead, as Eric Shaw knocked down a free throw following a Frostburg technical for having six players on the court. Jamal Newton hit a jumper 30 seconds later to up the lead to 16-14.

The two teams exchanged buckets over the next several minutes until Frostburg took the lead back at 22-20 with 7:27 remaining in the half. A Shaw layup with 6:37 left put the Eagles up 25-24, a lead the Eagles would hold onto for the remainder of the contest. UMW ended the half on a 13-7 run, up 38-31 at the break.

In the second, the two teams again exchanged baskets in the first several minutes, before Frostburg cut the lead to 48-45 at the 12:08 mark. The Eagles answered by going on an 18-2 run over the next 5:55 to take a commanding 66-47 lead. In the run, Lutkenhaus scored eight, Jamal Newton scored six, and Johnny Cronin had four.

The Eagles led by as much as 23 in the closing minutes. Cronin found Newton for a layup with 19 seconds left to cap all scoring at 75-55.

Lutkenhaus went 8-13 from the floor, making 5-10 three pointers and 3-3 free throws. Newton went 6-9 from the floor, making 3-5 three pointers en routes to 15 points. Austin Hall added 14 points and five assists.

The Eagles shot 47.4% from the field (27-57), making 11-25 three pointers and 10-14 free throws. Frostburg State shot 33.3% from the floor (21-63), making 5-24 three pointers and 8-12 free throws.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday, as they visit York at 3:00 pm.
