T.J. Jones Named to VaSID College Division All-State Men's Hoops Team; Mark Madison Named Rookie of the Year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2016 College Division All-State Men's Basketball Teams on Friday afternoon, showcasing a depth of talent across the commonwealth with eight different programs represented. Lynchburg College senior All-American Alex Graves hauled in the top player honor, while Christopher Newport University head coach, John Krikorian, was named the coach of the year.

Including Krikorian's nod as Coach of the Year, the CNU Captains led the way with three total selections, while Lynchburg and Mary Washington each had two players represented. UMW freshman Mark Madison was tabbed as the State Rookie of the Year to round out the major award winners.

Graves adds to his already illustrious senior season with the State Player of the Year honor, the first for a Lynchburg player. He helped lead the Hornets to the finest year in program history, earning first team All-American honors from the NABC along with D3hoops.com South Region and Conference Player of the Year laurels.

A 6-5 forward from Waynesboro, Va., Graves averaged 16.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent from the floor this season. He led the league in rebounding, blocked shots and field goals made, while ranking second in scoring.

Like Graves with the Hornets, the VaSID Coach of the Year also led his program to new height in 2015-16. Krikorian and the Christopher Newport Captains had a banner year for the 49-year old program, reaching the NCAA Division III Final Four for the first time in program history.

Along the way, the Captains' sixth-year head coach led the team to their best season ever with a 30-2 final record, including a perfect 18-0 mark in conference play, setting a new league record for wins. For his efforts, he was recognized as the Glenn Robinson Division III National Coach of the Year as well as the  NABC Middle Atlantic District Coach of the Year and the Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

Rounding out the top honors was Mary Washington freshman Mark Madison. Tabbed the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, Madison ranked second on the team in scoring average with a 12.8 points per game pace. He was just the second UMW player to secure CAC Rookie of the Year honors and is the first Eagle to collect the VaSID State Rookie of the Year designation.

A total of eight schools were represented on the 10-man All-State squad with only Lynchburg and Christopher Newport. having more than one honoree. Graves earned first team honors and was joined by teammate Zack Burnett on the second team, while Christopher Newport placed Marcus Carter on the first team and Tim Daly on the second team.

Rounding out the first team with Graves and Carter were Ray Anderson (Virginia Union), T.J. Jones (Mary Washington), and Khory Moore (Virginia Wesleyan).

Joining Burnett and Daly on the second team were Zach Desgain (Randolph), Joey Miller (Roanoke), and Lamont Moore (Randolph-Macon).

VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership to VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
