Balanced Attack Leads UMW Men Past Frostburg, 85-71

Sophomore forward Eric Shaw scored 18 points, grabbed five boards, and tallied four blocks to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to an 85-71 win over conference foe Frostburg State on Wednesday evening in the Ron Rosner Arena. Junior guard TJ Jones scored 19, and freshman Mark Madison added 18.

In the early going, both teams exchanged baskets for the first six minutes of the game, with Frostburg holding an 8-7 edge over UMW. A layup from junior center Emerson Burk gave the Eagles a one point lead, a lead in which they would build on for the rest of the contest. Shaw, Jones, and Madison combined for 32 first half points to help the Eagles extend their lead to 19 at the half, at 47-28. Junior guard Matt Forrest gave the Eagles a spark off the bench, drilling three triples in less than three and a half minutes.

In the second half, the Eagles quickly pushed the lead to 23 at 54-31, on two three pointers from Madison and a free throw from Shaw. UMW continued to cushion their lead, thanks to a 13-5 run, bringing the score to 67-36. In the run, Jones scored seven, Burke had four, and Mahoney laid in two.

Frostburg clawed their way back to cut the deficit to 13 in the remaining minutes, but the Eagles responded to the pressure from the Bobcats and secured the victory with free throw shooting and a handful of buckets in transition.

UMW shot 42.4% from the floor (25-59), making 7-22 three pointers and 28-35 free throws. Frostburg State shot 36.8% from the floor (25-68), making 9-28 three pointers and 12-20 free throws. Mary Washington held a 45-40 advantage on the boards, while Frostburg State committed 16 turnovers to UMW's 15.

Shaw shot an efficient 6-9 from the floor, Madison shot 4-8 from three, and Jones went 13-15 from the charity stripe. Lutkenhaus led all Eagles with 10 boards and seven assists.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host York (Pa.) in the Ron Rosner Arena at 3:00 p.m. for another CAC matchup.
