UMW Men's Basketball Drops CAC Thriller to St. Mary's, 71-66, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 71-66 decision to St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action from the Anderson Center on Wednesday night. The Eagles fall to 5-8 in CAC play.

UMW opened the game with a three pointer from Ty Thurston to take the early lead, and ran its lead to seven, 19-12, on a Matt Forrest three pointer with 7:11 left in the half. The Seahawks tied the score at 21-21 with 3:34 left, and gained a two-point lead at 23-21 with 3:05 remaining.

A jumper from freshman Eric Shaw tied the score once again, and after a SMC three pointer, senior Taylor Johnson answered to again tie the score with 2:05 on the clock. After an Emerson Burk free throw, SMC made the last bucket of the half to lead, 28-27, at intermission.

In the second half, the Seahawks slowly built their lead to as many as 14 points, but each time the Seahawks began to pull away, the Eagles would answer. A three pointer from John Lutkenhaus cut the score to 60-49 with 5:38 left, and a 9-2 run capped by a Johnson three pointer cut the deficit to 67-62 with 1:07 left.

The Eagles drew a pair of turnovers late, but could come no closer, as Shaw hit a three pointer with four seconds left to cut the final to 71-66.

Shaw shot 8-11 from the field and 8-9 from the free throw line en route to 25 points, and added seven rebounds. Johnson scord 12 points and added eight rebounds.

UMW shot 44% from the field (22-50), making 7-18 three pointers and 15-21 free throws. St. Mary's shot 26-56 (46.4%), making 8-22 three pointers and 11-18 free throws. The Seahawks led in rebounds, 34-31.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University at 4 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
