UMW Men Fall to Salisbury, 71-60, in Wednesday Night CAC Contest

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 71-60 decision to Salisbury University on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference play at the Anderson Center. The Eagles fall to 1-11 overall and 1-4 in CAC play.

The first half started with Salisbury grabbing an early lead, but the Eagles used a 6-0 spurt to lead, 9-5, with 14:40 left in the first half. A pair of Sea Gull three pointers gave the visitors the lead, but the Eagles answered with an Emerson Burk layup to knot the score at 14-14 with 10:58 left. The lead would change hands four times in the next eight minutes, with neither team leading by more than four. Salisbury ended the half on a 10-0 run, and led, 31-24, at halftime.

Salisbury started the second half led by three three-pointers from Justin Witmer to up its lead to 16, at 47-31 with 15:58 to play. The Eagles chipped away at the deficit, cutting the margin to 55-48 with 8:27 to play on an Eric Shaw layup, and cut the deficit to four at 64-60 with 1:49 to play on a John Lutkenhaus three pointer.

But the Sea Gulls had one run left, scoring the final seven points to take the 71-60 decision. UMW shot 45.1% (23-51) with 4-15 three pointers, and made 10-16 free throws. Salisbury shot 46.6% (27-58), with 12-27 three pointers, and made 5-9 free throws. Salisbury led on the glass, 37-28.

Shaw led the Eagles with 17 points on 7-12 shooting, and had six rebounds, while Taylor Johnson scored 12 with six rebounds. Brent Mahoney and Lutkenhaus each scored 11 for UMW. Witmer led all scorers with 24.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Wesley College at 3 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
