UMW Men Fall at #11 Va. Wesleyan, 81-60

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 81-60 decision at 11th ranked Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday night in Virginia Beach, Va. The Eagles were led by Eric Shaw's 13 points, while Miguel Kissoon added 12 off the bench.

The Eagles grabbed an early 6-4 lead through five minutes, but the Marlins responded with an 11-0 run, including three straight three pointers, to take a 15-6 lead with 12:04 remaining in the first half.

After the Eagles trimmed the deficit to seven at 20-13 on a Matt Forrest three pointer, the Marlins again hit back to back threes to advance the lead to 13, at 26-13, and and a Brandon Mitchell layup followed to extend VWC's lead to 15 with 7:51 left. The lead swung back and forth between 12 and 15 points for the remainder of the half, with the hosts holding a 44-29 lead at halftime.

A Shaw jumper and three pointer from Taylor Johnson cut the deficit to 12 at 46-34 with 18:50 to play, but the Marlins answered and grew the lead to 27 with 7:39 remaining. Six straight points at the conclusion from freshman Miguel Kissoon cut the final margin to 81-60.

Shaw led the Eagles on 6-11 shooting, while Kisson scored 12 on 4-7 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. Johnson scored 10 as the third Eagle in double figures.

UMW shot 45.3% from the field (24-53), making 3-15 three pointers and went 7-9 from the free throw line. The Marlins shot 43.1% (31-72), with 10 three pointers and went 9-14 at the charity stripe. The Marlins led in rebounds, 43-30, and caused 23 Eagle turnovers.

UMW will host Randolph College on Saturday at 2:00 pm in the final game before the holiday break.
