UMW Men's Basketball Tops Salisbury, 74-49 in CAC Action

Junior guard E.J. Willis scored the first seven points of the game, and the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team made its first seven shots en route to a 59% shooting night as the Eagles topped Salisbury, 74-49, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at the Anderson Center. Four Eagles reached double figures as the team shot 9-14 on three point attempts.

The Eagles built a 14-8 early lead, as Willis made a three-pointer, two free throws and a layup, followed by layups from Sean Armstrong and Dom Morra before Bradley Riester hit the first of his four three pointers. The Sea Gulls trimmed the lead to 18-15 before the Eagles scored four straight, capped by a Willis dunk with 7:58 remaining to give UMW a 27-19 advantage.

The Eagles continued their torrid first half shooting, as Jamie Richardson and Marcellus Holley hit three pointers to give UMW a 39-25 halftime edge. The Eagles shot 68.4% from the floor in the opening half (13-19), and went 4-5 from the free throw line.

UMW opened the second on a 10-2 runwith Riester providing a pair of three pointers. A four-point play by Riester capped the run, and the Eagles upped the margin to 27 at 60-33 with 9:48 remaining. A three from Armstrong with 5:54 left ran UMW's lead to 69-37, and the Eagles were able to run down the clock for the final minutes.

Riester led all scorers with 15 points, while Armstrong scored 14 and Willis and Dylan Farinet each scored 11. Salisbury was led by Travon Vann and Elijah Gore, who each scored 10.

Mary Washington will return to Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, when they host Marymount University at 3:00 p.m.
