Armstrong, Riester Lead UMW to 65-60 Win at Frostburg in Saturday CAC Matinee

Sophomore forward Sean Armstrong scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds and junior guard Bradley Riester added 17 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 65-60 win at Frostburg State University on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles carried a slim lead through much of the early going, after the first basket of the game, a dunk from freshman Lamonte Fields, put UMW ahead. The Bobcats took their first lead at 18-17 on a Royce Hunsicker jumper with 7:15 remaining in the half. The Bobcats ran their lead to four several times, with junior Dylan Farinet making a lay-in at the buzzer to cut UMW's halftime deficit to 33-31.

In the second half, the Bobcats worked the lead on several occasions, but each time the Eagles answered to tie the score. Trailing by three at 43-40 with 14:25 remaining, Farinet hit a three pointer to tie the score, and a three-point play from Armstrong put the Eagles ahead to stay with 10:53 remaining.

UMW went on a 12-0 run, as Fields and Armstrong each made layups before Riester hit a three pointer, then made four straight free throws after a foul and technical on the Bobcats. E.J. Willis hit a free throw to give UMW a 58-45 lead with 6:20 remaining. An 11-0 run by the Bobcats cut the deficit to two at 58-56 with three minutes left, but Riester answered with another three pointer, and UMWmade enough free throws down the stretch for the win.

The Eagles shot 41.5% (22-53) with six three pointers, while the Bobcats shot 40% (20-49) with six three pointers. UMW held a 41-29 advantage in reounds, including a 28-12 margin in the second half.

Fields had eight points, Farinet seven, and Willis six for UMW, who will return to CAC action on Wednesday when they host Salisbury University at 8:00 p.m.
