UMW Men's Basketball Tops York, 64-47, in Saturday CAC Action

Junior guard E.J. Willis scored a season-high 13 points to lead three Eagles in double figures as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team downed York College, 64-47, on Saturday in York, Pa. The Eagles move to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in CAC play at the league's midway point.

The Eagles led the contest throughout, jumping out to a 7-2 lead early, and expanding the lead on back-to-back three pointers from Willis and then another from Marcellus Holley to lead, 18-8, with 11:35 remaining. After York made a run to tie the score, junior guard Dylan Farinet hit a three-pointer return the lead to the Eagles, 23-20, with 6:36 to play, and eight straight points from Taylor Johnson upped the UMW advantage to 33-24 at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles got the lead to double digits on several occasions, but couldn't pull away from the Spartans, who trimmed the lead to as few as eight at 49-41 midway through the half. But the Eagles finally pulled away in the final 10 minutes, leading by as many as 18, with the final ending at 64-47.

The Eagles shot 42.3% from the field (22-52), including nine three pointers, and were 11-17 from the free throw line while York shot 34.9% (15-43), with three threepointers and went 14-18 from the charity stripe. UMW led in rebounds, 37-27.

Willis went 5-10 from the floor including 3-5 on three-pointers and added six rebounds for UMW, while Sean Armstrong, Dylan Farinet, and Taylor Johnson each scored 11 points for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will visit Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night in a nonconference game starting at 7:00 p.m.
