Armstrong's 18 Leads UMW Men Past Marymount, 65-56

Sophomore forward Sean Armstrong scored a game-high 18 points on 8-11 shooting to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 65-56 win at Marymount University on Wednesday in Arlington. Junior Bradley Riester added 15 for the Eagles, now 7-7 overall and 1-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles jumped on top early, as Taylor Johnson scored five points in the first two minutes to give UMW a 7-2 lead. The Saints hit back-to-back three pointers to take a two point lead at 13-11 with 11:02 left in the first half, but a pair of steals and layups from UMW tied the score at 17 with 4:42 to go. The Saints upped the lead to seven before a pair of John Yoxthimer free throws cut UMW's deficit at halftime to 25-20.

Mary Washington erupted for 45 points in the second half, starting with a 13-2 run keyed by eight points from Armstrong to start the second half. UMW gradually built the lead to 18 on a three pointer from junior Dom Morra with 6:18 remaining. UMW made 6-8 free throws down the stretch for the nine-point win.

The Eagles shot 40% for the game (20-50), with six three pointers, while Marymount shot 44% (20-55). UMW was 19-30 from the free throw line, and the Saints 10-14. Marymount held a 34-30 edge in rebounding, but committed 24 turnovers.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University in another CAC contest.
