UMW Men's Basketball Falls in OT at Undefeated NC Wesleyan, 89-85

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team started strong, making 10 of its first 12 shots, but couldn't hold on for the victory in an 89-85 overtime loss at undefeated North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday evening. The Eagles fall to 2-3, while the Bishops, who recieved votes in this week's national D3hoops.com poll, improves to 6-0.

It was the Eagles who started quick out of the gate, making 10 of its first 12 field goal attempts, and leading, 26-9, with 13:47 left in the first half. The Eagles upped the lead to 30-12 with 9:53 remaining before NC Wesleyan answered with a 13-0 run to cut the deficit to five at 30-25 with 6:40 left. UMW was able to keep the Bishops at arms' length, leading 41-35 at halftime.

In the second, both teams continued to shoot very well from the floor, with UMW leading by as many as 11 early and as few as one at 53-52 with 10:27 remaining. An 8-0 run by the Eagles returned the lead to nine at 61-52 with 8:37 to go.

The Eagles led by nine with three minutes left, but a 10-2 Bishops run to end regulation tied the score after 40 minutes, of which UMW held the lead for 39:24. In the extra peiod, UMW scored nine points, but the Bishops scored 13, and UMW fell victim to two crucial turnovers in falling, 89-85.

Mary Washington led in nearly every statistic except the score, shooting 50.8% from the floor, including 9-24 on three pointers, and went 12-17 from the free throw line. The Eagles led in rebounds, 37-28, steals, 10-9, and personal fouls, 26-17.

Jamie Richardson led the Eagles with 23 points, while Taylor Johnson scored 19 and Bradley Riester added 16 and a team-high seven rebounds. John Yoxthimer and Lamont Fields each had eight points for UMW.
