The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team jumped out to a 16-point halftime advantage, but Shenandoah erupted for 49 second half points to top the Eagles, 70-63, on Wednesday afternoon in the South Region Challenge in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Eagles fall to 0-2.

UMW led, 37-21, at halftime, shooting 53% from the floor while holding the Hornets to 29%. Jamie Richardson led UMW with 13 first-half points, going 6-6 from the floor.

The Hornets scored six straight to cut the deficit to 10 following halftime, and took the lead for the first time with a 17-2 run over a four-minute span with 7:55 left. A Taylor Johnson three pointer regained the lead for UMW with 6:20 left, and a pair of Richardson free throws with 4:15 left gave UMW a 52-51 lead.

Shenandoah ran out the clock on a 19-9 run, primarily from the free throw line, where they made 8-11 free throws down the stretch.

The Eagles were led by Bradley Riester's 17 points, while Richardson scored a career-high 15. Johnson and Lamont Fields each scored eight for the Eagles, while Fields hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.

Shenandoah was led by Jared Carithers' 17 points. The Hornets shot 59% from the floor in the second half, and made 15-21 free throws in the frame.

UMW shot 40.7% from the floor for the game, making just 7-26 three point attempts, and made 8-11 free throws in the game. Both teams had 16 turnovers and 10 steals.

The Eagles will take on York (NY) College on Saturday in North Carolina Wesleyan's holiday tournament at 5:00 p.m.
