Smith's Triple-Double Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past CNU, 86-82

Smith's Triple-Double Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past CNU, 86-82

Sophomore guard Walt Smith (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) recorded his first career triple-double in leading four Eagles in double figures as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team scored an 86-82 win at Christopher Newport University on Monday night in Newport News. The Eagles improve to 2-1 overall, and exact a bit of revenge on the Captains, who downed UMW in the Eagles' season opener last weekend.

The Captains jumped out to the lead in much the same way they did against UMW three days ago, leading 30-18 with 9:44 remaining in the first half. And, in much the same way they did in the opener, the Eagles went on a big run to lead at intermission - this time a 29-10 run gave UMW a 47-43 halftime edge.

CNU was able to gain the lead in the opening five minutes of the second half, holding a 53-51 advantage with 14:51 remaining. UMW went on an 8-0 to take the lead for good, led by a pair of jumpers from Smith.

In addition to Smith's 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, senior Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) had 16 points on 6-8 shooting, including 2-3 three-pointers. Sophomore E.J. Willis (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) had 15 points on 4-5 shooting, and sophomore Bradley Riester (Richmond, Va., Monacan) netted 13 points. CNU was led by Tra Benefield's 25 points.

The Eagles shot 45% from the floor (29-65), including 38% on three point attempts (9-24). UMW also connected for 19-27 free throws (70%) and forced 22 CNU turnovers.

Mary Washington will host North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. as part of the South Region Shootout hosted by the Eagles.
