
Sophomore guards Bradley Riester (Richmond, Va., Monacan) and Walt Smith (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) each scored 13 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 63-51 win over Hood College on Wednesday night at the Anderson Center in Capital Athletic Conference. The Eagles improve to 13-4 overall, and 8-0 in league play.
In a first half that saw poor shooting, the Eagles led 28-21, despite shooting just 29.7% from the floor. Hood shot 26% but also committed 11 turnovers in the first frame.
The second half saw the Blazers come back to take the lead at 32-20 with 13:20 to play, but the Eagles responded with a 17-0 run to assume a 47-32 advantage with 7:22 to play. The Blazers cut the deficit to as few as seven at 58-51 with less than a minute to go, but the Eagles made four free throws down the stretch for the 12-point win.
Riester went 2-7 from the floor but went 8-8 from the line. Smith went 5-12 from the floor and also added four assists. Freshman Sean Armstrong (Richmond, Va., Monacan) had a team-high seven rebounds for the Eagles. Cameron Cook had 15 for Hood.
The Eagles will visit Frostburg State University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
