Boward's 22 Points Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past Stevenson, 87-78



Freshman guard Matt Boward (Manassas, Va., Forest Park) scored a team-high 22 points, including four three pointers, to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to an 87-78 win over Stevenson University on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in CAC play.

Stevenson led by as many as seven points on two occasions in the first half, but the Eagles used a 9-0 run to take their first lead at 25-23 with 8:44 left in the first half. The Eagles led by two, 41-39, at halftime.

The second half saw Stevenson immediately take the lead, and the score was tied at 67 with 7:47 to play. Boward hit a three pointer to give the Eagles the lead for good, as UMW pushed the lead to as many as 10 at 86-76 with 56 seconds remaining.

UMW shot 45.5% from the floor for the game (35-77), including nine three pointers. The Eagles caused 18 Mustang turnovers and held a 54-43 advantage in rebounding. Also in double figures for UMW were junior forward Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) with 15 points and seven rebounds, and freshman guard E.J. Willis (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) with 14 points. J.R. Gray (Staunton, Va., Robert E. Lee) led the Eagles with 13 rebounds to go with nine points.

Stevenson was led by Danny Murphy's 23 points. The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they visit Frostburg State University at 8:00 p.m.
