Smith, Eagles Run Past Marymount, 69-66

Freshman guard Walt Smith (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) scored 16 points to pace four UMW players in double figures as the Eagles defeated Marymount University, 69-66, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in CAC play.

The Eagles jumped out to a 35-22 halftime advantage, thanks to causing 19 Saint turnovers. The Eagles shot 42% from the floor in the first frame, the same as Marymount. The Saints turned up the pressure early in the second half and took a seven point lead, 63-56, with 6:27 to go. But the Eagles would score the next 11 points of the game, thanks to four points from Smith and a key three pointer by Ryan Farrar (Ashburn, Va., Centreville, Va.), which gave the Eagles the lead at 67-64 with 3:07 to go.

In addition to his 16 points, Smith had four rebounds and two steals. Also in double figures for UMW were E.J. Willis (Alexandria, Va., T.C. Williams) with 11 points, Farrar and junior forward Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee), who each scored 10. Dickman led UMW with seven rebounds.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when the Eagles face North Carolina Wesleyan College in Winchester, Va. starting at 3:30 p.m.
