FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Senior preseason All-American center Brandon Altmann (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored 32 points and added 22 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 73-68 win over visiting Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.
As the Eagles built a 33-22 halftime advantage, Altmann took control from the start, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 16 minutes. The Eagles shot 46.7% from the floor in the opening stanza, compared to just 27.6% for Wesley.
The Eagles overcame an early 7-5 deficit, leading 21-11 on a three pointer from Rocky Ullah (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) with 9:59 left in the half. Altmann scored 16 of UMW's first 18 points.
The second half saw the Eagles up the lead to 12 at 40-28, and the scoring stalled for nearly three minutes. Wesley trimmed the lead to six at 45-39, but with 5:36 to play, the Eagles led by 15, 58-43. The Wolverines were able to trim the deficit all the way to three at 69-66 with 30 seconds remaining, but the Eagles connected for four free throws from Altmann for the 73-68 win.
The eagles will visit Hood College on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for another CAC contest.
