FARMVILLE, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team forced several late turnovers and converted late free throws in defeating Shenandoah University, 68-61, on Saturday night at Hampden-Sydney College. The Eagles improve to 2-2, while the Hornets fall to 1-4.

The Eagles fell behind early, and trailed by as many as 10, at 16-6, with 13:20 remaining in the first half. But the Eagles used a pair of Brandon Altmann (Vienna, Va., James Madison) buckets, and three pointers from Ryan Farrar (Ashburn, Va., Centreville, Va.) and Tad Dickman (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) to tie the score at 16 with 11:32 left. After four ties and three lead changes, feshman Bart Reese (Herndon, Va., Oakton) hit a three pointer to give the Eagles a three-point halftime lead, at 31-28.

After Shenandoah cut the deficit to one at 40-39, senior Mike Fumai (Rockville, Md., Richard Montgomery) hit a key three pointer to up the Eagle advantage to 43-39 with 11:09 to play. Shenandoah was able to cut the deficit to three at 64-61 with 39 seconds left, but Qaiser Ahmed (Falls Church, Va., George C. Marshall) and Dickman each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch for the 68-61 final.

Altmann led Mary Washington with 25 points and added six rebounds, while Farrar was the only other Eagle in double figures with 11. Dickman added six points and nine rebounds for the Eagles, who made 7-19 three point attempts. Shenandoah was led by Brandon Bryan's 15 points. The Hornets shot 35.9% from the floor, including 6-24 on three pointers.

Mary Washington will face North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Farmville. NC Wesleyan fell to host Hampden Sydney in the opening game of the South Region Shootout earlier in the day on Saturday.
