1993-94 Mary Washington College Men's Basketball Season in Review

What may become the most athletic team in the 17-year tenure of head coach Tom Davies gears up for the 1994-95 campaign. MWC looks to match up better physically against an improved schedule, which includes the eighth and newest Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) member, SalisburyState. Last season, the Eagles claimed road victories over eventual CAC Tournament champion Goucher, 1992-93 CAC-champion Catholic and traditionally strong Shenandoah.

Davies welcomes back a pair of double-figure scorers in wings Jamie Warren (Sr./Springfield, VA) and Matt Seward (Sr./Baltimore, MD). Warren, a 6-2 transfer from George Mason University, averaged a team-best 16.6 points/game, including a 37-point effort in his MWC debut at Christopher Newport, and 36 in an overtime win at Shenandoah. The Second-Team All-CAC performer also paced the Eagles in free-throw percentage at .824 (third in the CAC) and steals (1.7/game). Seward averaged 11.1 points/game and was the team's top three-point marksman at .417. The 6-0 Seward - who ranked second behind Warren in free throw percentage at. 778 -led MWC in scoring in four of five contests during the middle of last season, including a 30-point barrage in a win over St. Mary's.

Another returnee who should make an impact is 6-3 wing Justin McCarthy (So./Centreville, VA). A strong defender and a potential force at the offensive end, McCarthy can operate inside or on the perimeter. At point guard, junior Mike Johnson (Lorton, VA) and co-captain Colin Whitehouse (Sr./Chesapeake, VA) are returnees who will battle for significant playing time. Johnson and Whitehouse can also contribute on the wing. Talented newcomers Chris Canino (Fr./Syracuse, NY), Mike Prensky (Fr./Lexington, MA) and Kosa So (So./Falls Church, VA; Northern Virginia Community College transfer) are adept at the point or off guard slots. Canino averaged 20 points/game as a high-schooler, Prensky was named one of New England's 'Top 100 Prospects" as a senior and So - an excellent leaper - was the leading three-point shotmaker in northern Virginia three seasons ago. Along with McCarthy, veterans battling for spots on the wing include sophomore Richie DeRose (Vienna, VA), who performed well in spot duty last season, and freshman Deluan Brown (Petersburg, VA). DeRose is one of MWC's top long-range shooters, while Brown is an outstanding leaper and slasher to the basket.

Up front, 6-5 sophomore Dan Zenker (Springfield, VA) will be joined by a strong cast ofnewcomers. Chris Wirth (So./Wading River, NY; New Haven University transfer) is a smooth 6-5 player with an outstanding jumper and strong inside instincts. Aside from Wirth - whom Davies considers MWC's top prospect - the Eagles welcome frontcourt newcomers Erik Bursch (6-5; Fr./Vienna, VA), a hard-working defender and rebounder, Marvin Felix (6-3; Fr./Dale City, VA), a leaper with standout potential, and 6-3 freshman Stephane Longchamp (Springfield, VA).
