1990-91 Mary Washington College Men's Basketball Season in Review

A strong mix ofveterans and younger players returns for head coach Tom Davies, including honorable-mention All-CAC performers Bernard Johnson (Sr./Martinsville, VA) and Richie Treger (Jr./Alexandria, VA). Johnson led the Eagles in scoring (13.1) and steals (56) and averaged 4.5 rebounds/game. The slashing 6-1 swingman also shot 51 percent from the floor in his first season at MWC after transferring from Emory & Henry. Treger, meanwhile, averaged 11.2 points while dishing out a team-high 126 assists. The quicksilver 5-7point guard also led MWC in three-point field goals made with 41 while starting all 27 games.

Another upperclassman looking to add double figure scoring is 6-3 senior wing Billy Sigler (Richmond, VA), who missed 13 games with various injuries but still averaged 10.4 points/game. However, it may be the upcoming sophomore class in which Davies builds for the future. A pair of freshmen who played in all 27games last season return. Steve Posey (Midlothian, VA) averaged 11.7 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game while setting a freshman record by shooting .533 from the floor. The 6-5 post player also paced the Eagles in free-throw shooting at. 779 and blocked shots with 11. David Winningham (Stafford, VA), a 6-4 post, averaged 5.1 points, including a season-high 16 in a 72-67 CAC first-round tournament game win over Gallaudet University.

Some other sophs to watch ... guard Jeremy White (5-9/S. Setauket, NY), postman John Friedsam (Virginia Beach, VA), wing Billy Hallock (6-2/Havre de Grace,
MD), guard Rob Brookes (5-10/Newtown, CT) and wing/post Scott Pate (Culpeper, VA). White established an MWC single-season record by shooting.473 from
three-point range, including five second half treys against Frostburg State.

Friedsam is an active 6-7 player who can bang inside and also block shots; he also possesses a good touch underneath. Hallock is probably the team's best leaper and a strong defender, and Brookes may prove to be a strong ballhandler and penetrator. At 6-3, Pate was the team's best all-around rebounder in last year's preseason, according to Davies, but broke his wrist in the season's first game. Juniors Neil Gallagher (6-6/Springfield, VA) and Peter Lee (6-1/Sykesville, MD) are two-year players who will also push for playing time.
