Bonte, Manceri Named to VaSID College Division All-State Golf Team; Bonte Claims Rookie of the Year

ASHLAND, VA. – Washington and Lee sophomore Brian Peccie took home the top men's golf statewide award in the college division -- while his coach, Pete Gyscek was similarly honored as the state's Coach of the Year, it was announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Friday. University of Mary Washington freshman Sebastien Bonte was honored as the state's top rookie as well, rounding out the top three honors from the Commonwealth's athletic communicators.

Peccie was named the VaSID Player of the Year for his work in 2018. A native of Norfolk, Peccie finished the season as the top-ranked golfer in the nation in Division III as well as earning the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship as an individual, alongside helping Washington and Lee to a second place finish at the Championship in Greensboro, N.C. He was named the Division III Arnold Palmer Award winner as well, as earning spots on the 2018 PING All-America First Team and 2018 PING All-South Region First Team. Peccie was named the Player of the Year in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and earned a spot on the conference's All-ODAC First Team. This is the second time Peccie has appeared on the VaSID Men's Golf College Division All-State First Team.  Peccie is featured in the latest edition of Sports Illustrated as a "Face in the Crowd." He is the first Washington and Lee student-athlete to win an individual national championship in men's golf.

His coach Gyscek, also earned top billing from VaSID. Gyseck's Generals were the NCAA Division III runners-up in 2018. The team also earned a runners-up placing at the ODAC Tournament and ranked eighth overall in GolfStat's Division III rankings.  The Generals finished in the Top 8 of all but one of the team's competitions this year and in the Top 5 five times. Gyscek, who wrapped up his seventh season in Lexington, has placed three Generals on All-ODAC teams, two on the PING Division III All-South Region teams and one player on the PING Division III All-American squad in 2018 alone. Also this season, members of his team earned a multitude of honors for academic excellence -- including a 2018 Srixon/Cleveland Golf Division III All-America Scholar, a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2018 Google Cloud Division III At-Large Academic All-American and the ODAC/Va. Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete.

Bonte, a native of Arlington, Va., earned VaSID's top billing for a newcomer – Rookie of the Year. Bonte earned a spot on the 2018 PING Division III All-South Region squad and was recognized as the Capital Athletic Conference's Player and Rookie of the Year. Along with the major honors from the CAC, he also earned a spot on the 2018 All-CAC First Team. Named CAC Player of the Week three times, Bonte helped lead Mary Washington to a CAC Championship in just its second season competing in men's golf -- with Bonte taking the individual title at the conference's season finale. Bonte and UMW competed in the NCAA Tournament in Greensboro for the first time as a program in 2018 as well.
