CHAMPIONS! UMW Men's Golf Wins CAC Championship in 2nd Year of Existence; Advances to NCAA Championship

CAPE CHARLES, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's golf team captured the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at Bay Creek Golf Resort, marking the team's first conference title in just its second year as a sport at the school. The Eagles shot a (+25) 313 on Saturday, and ended the event at (+61) through 54 holes, 24 strokes ahead of second-place Christopher Newport (+85) and 35 strokes ahead of third place York (+96). Marymount finished fourth at +161, followed by Wesley, Southern Va., Penn State Harrisburg, and New Jersey City.

"We played very well on Thursday and Friday, which allowed us to play at ease today", said UMW head coach Sam Oglesby. "We've played solid golf all year, and everyone contributed this weekend, which speaks well to what we can become."

Freshman Sebastien Bonte gained the CAC Player and Rookie of the Year after capturing medalist honors with a three day score of (+12) 228. Sophomore Phillip Manceri shot a (+15) 231 to tie for third, while sophomore Jason Guintu posted a (+17) 233 to finish fifth. Sophomore Ethan Kelly finished seventh with a (+19) 235, and sophomore Austin Matz finished 11th with a (+29) 245.

Matz was named the CAC's Andrew Geyer Award winner, and head coach Sam Oglesby was named the CAC Coach of the Year. The Andrew Geyer Award recognizes a CAC golfer for  "outstanding academic credentials, athletics, citizenship and community service." This award was created to honor former Wesley College standout Andrew Guyer. 

Bonte, Manceri, and Guintu were named to the All-CAC first team, and Kelly and Matz were named to the second team.

On Saturday, Kelly led the Eagles with a 75, while Manceri shot a 76 and Bonte a 78. Guintu shot 84 and Matz 86.

The Eagles will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship on May 16-18 in Greensboro, N.C.
