UMW's Anderson, Sutherland Named CAC Athletes of the Week

 YORK, Pa. -- The Capital Athletic Conference announced its Dec. 4, 2012, weekly award winners:

MEN’S SWIMMING
Mary Washington sophomore ALEX ANDERSON (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was named the CAC Men’s Swimming Athlete of the Week after he posted an NCAA “A” cut and two NCAA “B” cuts while leading the Eagles to third place at the Gettysburg Invitational. On Saturday morning, Anderson swam to a pool record and automatic cut for the NCAA Championships in finishing first in the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.03. He also swam to an NCAA provisional time in the 50 free at 20.89, and gained a second B cut in the 100 freestyle at 45.82.


WOMEN’S SWIMMING
St. Mary’s senior KELLY HEYDE (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) was named the CAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for the fourth time this season after breaking a school record in the 100 breaststroke and registering an NCAA “B” cut in the 400 IM in leading the Seahawks to third place at the F&M Invitational - the team’s highest-ever finish in the meet. Heyde finished second in the 400 IM (4:32.95) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.61).


MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Wesley freshmen COREY JONES (Newark, Del./Howard) and LAMAR MONROE (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) were selected as the CAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week.
Jones was named the Men’s Track Athlete Of The Week after finishing first among 52 runners in the 60-meter dash at the Ursinus Bow Tie Classic. Jones qualified for the ECAC Championships and missed the CAC record by just 0.01 seconds when he crossed the finish line in 7.04 seconds.
Monroe was named the Men’s Field Athlete Of The Week after breaking the CAC record with a first-place finish in the triple jump at the Ursinus Bow-Tie Classic. Monroe, who was also third in the high jump, has the second-best effort in NCAA Division III this season and qualified for the ECAC Championships with a triple jump of 44-9 3/4 (13.66m).


WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
York sophomore DEBORAH FIDELE (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Service) and Mary Washington senior MICHELLE SUTHERLAND (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) were selected as the CAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week.
Fidele was named the Women’s Track Athlete Of The Week after breaking the school record in the 300-meter dash (46.54) and finishing fifth overall in the 200 (29.05) at the season-opening Dickinson Holliday Invitational.
Sutherland was named the Women’s Field Athlete Of The Week after registering a second-place finish in the long jump (16-1) at the Dickinson Holliday Invitational. She was also a member of the second-place 4x200 relay team.
