Sophomore Grayson Scott scored on a pair of penalty corners, and senior Emma Bernard scored the game winner on a penalty stroke, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team edged St. Mary's College, 3-2, on a rainy Monday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-5 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly, scoring on their first penalty corner chance at 4:09, Scott fired the direct corner from Lipton off a defender's stick and into goal. The Eagles led, 1-0, after 15 minutes.
In the second, the visiting Seahawks scored a pair of goals to take the lead, but the Eagles regained momentum with 6:59 left before halftime, as Lipton and Scott teamed up for another tally on a corner. The score remained tied to intermission.
UMW found the eventual game winner at 32:25, as Bernard gained a breakaway, and gained a penalty stroke. The senior connected for her eighth goal of the season, and the UMW defense tightened for the remainder of the game.
The Eagles led in shots, 10-5, as well as in corners, 10-1. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb gained the win, with 60 minutes in cage.
UMW will return to action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m. in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference showdown.
