UMW Field Hockey Falls to Rhodes in OT, 3-2, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team built a 2-0 advantage, but visiting Rhodes College stormed back to knot the score in the fourth quarter, and added the game winner in overtime to down the Eagles, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 7-5 on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, UMW scored early in the second. Sophomore Monique Lipton scored 17:28 into the game, taking a saved shot rebound and putting it into the open cage. The Eagles held the 1-0 lead through halftime.

In the third, UMW wasted little time in adding an insurance score, as Grayson Scott took a pass from Emma Bernard and redirected the ball into goal with 59 seconds elapsed in the quarter. Rhodes cut the margin to 2-1 with a score on a penalty corner with 7:24 left, and knotted the score at 2-2 with 3:22 remaining. The Lynx found the game winner with 2:03 elapsed in overtime.

Mary Washington led in shots, 15-11, as well as penalty corners, 9-4. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made four saves on the day.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they host St. Mary's College at 6:00 p.m.
