Bernard's Two Scores Lift UMW Field Hockey Past Widener, 2-1

All-conference senior forward Emma Bernard scored a pair of goals in lifting the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Widener University on Sunday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.

Widener opened the scoring on the day with a score at 12:43 into the first quarter, and led, 1-0, into the second. The Eagles knotted the score just 1:19 into the second quarter, as freshman Katie Royle sent a ball into the circle from the left to junior Grayson Scott, who lifted the pass to Bernard, who slid the ball into the open cage.

The game remained tied through halftime and into the fourth quarter, despite the Eagles gaining quality chances on penalty corners. Then, with 12:08 remaining in regulation, Bernard successfully converted on a penalty stroke, which proved to be the winning tally.

The Eagles led in shots, 22-2, as well as in corners, 11-3. Senior goalie Bailey McNabb made one save in the cage.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they visit Bridgewater College at 7:00 p.m.
