The Universiy of Mary Washington field hockey team opened the 2023 season wih a 3-0 victory at Roanoke College on Friday afternoon. The Eagles captured the opener by caging one goal in the first quarter and a pair in the fourth.
The Eagles opened the scoring midway through the first, as Kathryn Royle scored on an Emma Bernard assist at 7:12. The score stood at 1-0 through the second and third quarters.
In the fourth, UMW gained a bit of breathing room wih an insurance score from Bernard at 47:29, and Dyanela Rivarola added another unassisted at 55:46.
Mary Washington led in shots, 16-7, as well as penalty corners, 18-4. Senior goalie Bailey McNabb made a pair of saves in 49 minutes, and Erin Roy preserved the shutout without making a save in the final 11 minutes.
he Eagles will return to action on SUnday, when they host Widener University at 12:00 p.m.
