UMW Field Hockey Falls to Centre, 3-2, on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Centre College on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 4-7 on the season.

Mary Washington started the scoring swiftly, as freshman Monique Lipton scored just 48 seconds into the contest off a penalty corner. Lipton redirected a shot fired from Emma Bernard, who took the direct corner from Zoe Hammond. Centre answered at 2:12, and the game remained tied at 1-1 through halftime.

The Eagles went back ahead at 36:56, as Bernard scored her 10th goal of the season, off another corner, with assists to Sydney Keating and Lipton. Centre knotted the score 3:11 later, and the game went to the fourth quarter  knotted at 2-2. The Colonels found the winning goal at 52:32 on a penalty corner.

Centre led in shots, 11-10, as well as penalty corners, 10-5. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made four saves, and junior Tally Vaughan added a defensive save for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday night when they visit sixth ranked Kean College at 6:30 p.m.
