UMW Field Hockey Tops Transylvania, 8-0; Win Streak at Five

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team erupted for eight goals in an 8-0 victory at Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 6-3 on the season, and run their win streak to five straight.

Freshman Jessica Tyndall (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) opened the scoring at 1:47 into the game on an assist from sophomore Mary Vaughan (Gloucester, Va. Glucester). Senior Sydney Keating (Fairfax, Va.  Fairfax) upped the lead to 2-0 at 3:13 on a penalty stoke. Sophomore Riley Tengwall (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) added the third goal of the opening frame at 6:29 on an assist from sophomore Vaughan.

In the second quarter, junior Maggie Ellis (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) scored her first goal of the day on an assist from freshman Jessica Wood (Fauquier, Va. / Kettle Run), and the Eagles led, 4-0, at halftime.

The Eagles scored twice in the third quarter, with Ellis scoring unassisted at 34:24, and junior Caperton Beirne (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) added another at 42:13. In the fourth, Tengwall added her second of the day at 46:39, and Bierne provided the capper at 53:58.

Mary Washington held a 26-0 advantage in shots, and a 16-0 lead in penalty corners. Junior Chloe Billy (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) registered the shutout without making a save.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Centre College at 12:00 p.m.
