Senior midfielder Sydney Keating (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) scored a pair of goals to lift the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 win over visiting St. Mary's College of Md. on Wednesday afternoon at a rainy Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-3 on the season, after the win in a game delayed 45 minutes by lightning.
The Seahawks scored less than one minute into the game on a penalty stroke, and then the game was halted. After the delay, the Eagles started with a penalty corner, and sophomore Emma Bernard (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) scored on a Maggie Ellis (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) assist, and the game remained tied to the second quarter.
In the second, Keating scored with 10:50 left to put UMW ahead, and added another 9:34 later for a key insurance score. The Seahawks added another with 10:38 left, but could climb no closer.
The Eagles led in shots, 9-8, as well as penalty corners, 5-4. UMW junior goalie Chloe Billy (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) posted five saves in the win.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they visit Bridgewater College at 1:00 p.m.
