Dixon, Hopkins Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Randolph-Macon, 5-3

Senior Lexie Dixson scored one goal and added a pair of assists, and classmate Lauren Hopkins scored a pair of goals to lift the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-6 on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, UMW reached the scoreboard with 8:10 remaining in the second, as sophomore Jess Smith scored on a Dixson assist. The Eagles stayed ahead, 1-0, through halftime.

In the second, the Eagles erupted for four scores. Hopkins scored on a Dixson assist with 5:05 elapsed into the quarter, and junior Izzy Scholz followed with 1:28 later to push the margin to 3-0. After a Yellow Jacket goal, Hopkins scored on a Dixson assist at 37:08. At 41:43, Dixson scored on a penalty stroke to push the lead to 5-1. The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of scores in the fourth quarter to cut the final margin to 5-3.

The Eagles led in shots, 23-11, as well as in penalty corners, 4-2. UMW goalkeeper Jillian Lawrence made eight saves, while Randolph-Macon's Gatlin Snyder and Katie Thompson combined for 11 stops, with a pair of defensive saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on October 11 when they visit #14 Christopher Newport University at 7:00 p.m.
