UMW Field Hockey Falls in Shootout to #10 CNU, 2-1, on Sunday Evening

The University of Mary Washington dropped a 2-1 decision to 10th ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday evening at the Battleground in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener. The Eagles slip to 6-3 on the season.

The Eagles found the cage first in the contest, as sophomore Bella Urcia scored on a redirect from a Gillian Ross shot off a penalty corner at 17:06. The Captains tied the score in similar fashion at 27:42, as Rachel Allshouse scored off a Courtney Feist shot off a corner with a redirect.

From there, both defenses stiffened, and neither team would find another score through halftime, regulation, and a pair of 10-minute overtimes.

In the shootout that followed, the Captains shot first, and Fiest was successful. After UMW misses from Izzy Scholz and Sydney Keating and one CNU miss from Rachel Cooke, Allshouse was successful, giving the Captains a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five competition. Another UMW shot from Lauren Hopkins went wide, clinching the match for the visitors.

The Captains led in shots, 17-12, while the Eagles led in penalty corners, 11-5. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had 10 saves, while CNU's Olivia Davis had six stops.

The Eagles will be back in action again on Wednesday night as they visit Randolph-Macon College at 7:30 p.m.
