Hopkins' Second Straight Hat Trick Leads UMW Field Hockey Past Washington & Lee, 4-0

Junior Lauren Hopkins became the first University of Mary Washington field hockey player to notch consecutive hat tricks since 2011, as the Eagles defeated Washington & Lee University, 4-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Generals fall to 1-5.

Hopkins started the scoring at 9:42 on an unassisted goal off the goalie's pads, and added another at 30:34 on an assist from freshman Sydney Keating. The Eagles held the 2-0 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, Hopkins completed the hat trick at 47:24 on a pass from Izzy Scholz. Sophomore Bella Urcia capped the scoring at 52:07 on an assist from junior Lexie Dixson.

The last back-to-back hat tricks for the Eagles came from Morgan Jones on October 22 and 30, 2011.

The Eagles led in shots, 13-6, while the Generals led in penalty corners, 7-4. UMW goalkeepers Jessica Cavolt and Jillian Lawrence each provided three saves, while Ariyel Yavalar registered five for the Generals.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when the Eagles host Shenandoah University at noon.
