#17 UMW Field Hockey Rolls Past EMU, 10-1, on Wednesday Evening

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team caged five goals in each half en route to a 10-1 victory at Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday evening in Harrisonburg, Va. UMW improves to 4-1 on the season.

Sophomore Lauren Hopkins started the scoring in the seventh minute on an assist from Lexie Dixson, and senior Erin Kaila added another at 9:14. Just 46 seconds later, senior Noor Varjabedian scored her first of the season to push the advantage to 3-0.

At 14:33, junior Shelby Press scored off a pass from Allegra Massey-Elim to extend the lead to 4-0, and Hopkins scored on a Morgan MacCartney assist with 7:04 remaining in the frame.

In the second half, UMW continued to score, with MacCartney scoring on a Kaila assist with just 40 seconds elapsed into play. At 40:14, Alaina Shivers caged her first goal of the season, and assisted freshman Bella Urcia on her first of the day at 45:19. EMU scored in the 50th minute to prevent the shutout, but UMW answered back with a pair of scores from defender Mackenzie Burnett in the 67th and 68th minutes.

UMW led in shots, 54-5, and in penalty corners, 13-1. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt made one save in 35 scoreless minutes, and sophomore Ivy Hollander allowed one tally in the second half.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Lynchburg College at 1:00 p.m.
