Freshman forward Lauren Hopkins scored two goals and added three assists in playing a hand in all five scores as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated York College of Pa., 5-1, on Tuesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 10-4 and 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play, while the Spartans slip to 11-4 and 3-2.

The late arriving fans missed out on the early fireworks the Eagles provided, as UMW scored three times in the opening five minutes of the game. Junior Allegra Massey-Elim scored off a Hopkins assist on a penalty corner 1:37 into the contest, and Hopkins scored on a Christine Loehr feed at 2:56.

The Eagles upped the lead to 3-0 at 4:42, as freshman Lexie Dixson scored on a Hopkins pass. UMW added another tally ten minutes before halftime, as Morgan LaRowe scored on a breakaway on a Hopkins assist, and the Eagles held a 4-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second, Mary Washington used a Hopkins score after a saved shot ten minutes into play to build the lead to 5-0. York spoiled the shutout with 5:41 remaining on a goal from Lindsay Nye.

Mary Washington led in shots, 15-9, while the Spartans led in penalty corners, 9-6. UMW goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt had three saves and junior Erin Kaila added a defensive save for the Eagles. York's Kaela Johnson had four saves in relief, and Alexa Taylor and Sydney Lemarsh each had defensive saves for the Spartans.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they host Wesley College in another CAC contest at 1:00 p.m. for Homecoming.
