Massey-Elim, Hopkins Lead UMW Field Hockey Past St. Mary's, 3-2, on Rainy Saturday

Junior Allegra Massey-Elim scored a pair of goals and freshman Lauren Hopkins added a goal and two assists to pace the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over St. Mary's College (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-4, while the Seahawks slip to 3-8. Both teams move to 1-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Seahawks scored early in the first half. Megan Moore collected a saved shot from Mollie Belson and found the back of the cage with 28:48 left in the half. Although both sides had chances in the interim, neither could find a score before halftime, and the visitors held the 1-0 advantage at intermission.

The second half was just the opposite, as the teams connected on four goals in the opening 15 minutes. The Eagles tied the score 3:08 into the second half, as Massey-Elim scored on a corner from Hopkins. The Eagles claimed the lead seven minutes later, as Hopkins scored on a Christine Loehr pass, taking the ball from in front of the keeper on a nifty one timer redirect.

The Seahawks answered to tie the game 3:32 later, as Belson scored on a Moore assist on a cross from the right side. Massey-Elim provided the game winner with 21:11 left on another Hopkins penalty corner.

The Eagles led in shots, 17-11, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half. UMW also led in corners, 10-6. Sophomore Jessica Cavolt had eight saves in goal for Mary Washington, while St. Mary's goalie Alyssa Thompson had four saves, and Jessica Zhang added a defensive save for the Seahawks.

UMW will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Frostburg State University at 6 p.m. in another CAC battle.
