#16 UMW Field Hockey Routs Bridgewater, 7-2, on Tuesday Night

Freshman Lexie Dixson scored her first collegiate hat trick, and freshman Lauren Hopkins and junior Allegra Massey-Elim each added two scores to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-2 victory at Bridgewater College on Tuesday night in Bridgewater. The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season.

Hopkins opened the scoring early on a pass from senior Christine Loehr off a penalty corner at 2:52 into play. Bridgewater tied the score at 9:30 on a penalty corner, but the Eagles grabbed the lead for good at 16:01 as Massey-Elim scored on a Loehr pass. Dixson scored on a Hopkins assist in the final minute of the half to give UMW a 3-1 halftime advantage.

The Eagles quickly extended the lead to 4-1 just 3:15 into the second half, as Dixson scored off a loose ball in the circle, and she then completed the natural hat trick with another score at 51:25. Bridgewater added its second score of the night to trim the deficit to 5-2, but Massey-Elim scored on a Loehr assist at 53:59, and Hopkins capped the scoring on an Erin Kaila assist at 68:35.

Mary Washington led in shots, 21-13, and both teams had 10 penalty corners. Jessica Cavolt had four saves and Ivy Hollander one in goal for UMW, who will be back in action again on Saturday when they host Lynchburg College at 1:00 p.m.
