The 11th-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 2-1 thriller to Salisbury University on Saturday in the championship of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

In the first half, Salisbury had many chances to take an early lead, but freshman goalie Jessica Cavolt and the UMW defense made several key stops to keep the score at 0-0. UMW had some chances of their own when they earned penalty corners at the 14:21 and 22:22 minute marks, but were unable to capitalize.

UMW scored on a goal from senior Christine Loehr at the 26:24 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Salisbury responded with less than a minute left in the first half with a goal from Sam Johnson to tie the score at 1-1.

In the second half, both teams failed to find the net, with UMW leading in shots, three to zero. At the end of regulation, Salisbury earned a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock, but could not make the most of the opportunity as the game was sent to overtime.

 In the first overtime, Salisbury put the pressure back on UMW, taking four shots to UMW's zero. In the second overtime, both teams had many chances to end the game with Salisbury leading in shots five to three and UMW leading in penalty corners, three to one. After about 97 minutes of thrilling play, Salisbury found the net on a goal from Courtney Jantzen to take the lead and capture the CAC Tournament Championship.

Salisbury held a 14-11 advantage in shots, while UMW led in penalty corners, 10-9. Cavolt had six saves for UMW, while Tressie Windsor has seven for Salisbury, with Breck Sullivan adding a defensive save.

The Eagles move to 14-5, the sixth straight year the Eagles have won at least 14 games.
