Steele's First Half Hat Trick Lifts #11 UMW Field Hockey to 7-1 Win Over Frostburg in Regular Season Finale

Senior forward Jenna Steele scored three first half goals, and four on the day, to lead the 11th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-1 victory over Frostburg State University on Wednesday at a rainy Battleground. The Eagles close the regular season with a record of 13-4.

The Eagles offense arrived early, as senior Kathleen Namey scored on a Haley Kane assist just 40 seconds into the game. Steele scored her first tally three minutes later to push the lead to 2-0, and scored at 11:41 off a rebound of her own shot, to put UMW ahead, 3-0. Steele closed the half scoring with another tally at 22:05.

In the second half, senior Carlee Budd scored eight minutes into action, and Steele followed with her fourth goal of the day with 14 minutes left. After Frostburg's Alexandra Darrow spoiled the shutout with eight minutes left, Kane scored with four minutes left to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 28-4, and penalty corners, 8-2. UMW freshman goalie Jessica Cavolt had one save in goal, while Nicole Leighty had 13 saves for Frostburg.

The Eagles will gain the top seed in next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament if Salisbury defeats Frostburg on Friday, as UMW would hold a goal-differential tiebreaker among UMW, Salisbury, and CNU.
