Jenna Steele Leads #12 UMW Field Hockey Past Frostburg for Homecoming

Sophomore Jenna Steele scored three goals and added one assist in leading the 12th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to an 11-2 win over Frostburg State University on Saturday at the Battleground. Senior Caitlin Baker scored twice and added three assists for the Eagles, who improve to 15-1 overall and 4-1 in Capital Athletic conference play.

Baker, the all-time leader in assists for the Eagles, started the scoring with a goal 13:22 into play on an assist from Steele. With 15 minutes remaining in the half, Steele scored on a Christine Loehr assist to up the margin to 2-0, and then UMW reeled off three goals in 2:28 to close the half with a flurry.

Freshman Ashlin Jones scored at 26:26, redirecting a Carlee Budd shot, and Jones scored again 1:10 later on a Baker pass. Steele scored on a baker feed with 6:06 remaining to build the lead to 5-0, but Frostburg's Courtney Abell scored to snap the shutout in the closing minutes of the half.

In the second, Budd scored 10 minutes into play on a Haley Kane assist, and Steele scored unassisted 3:31 later to up the lead to 7-1. After another Abell score for Frostburg, Kane scored on a Mallory Peebles assist, and senior Sarah Rankin followed with a goal at 60:45.

Freshman Katlyn Taliaferro scored on a Baker pass with 6:37 remaining, and Baker capped the scoring with 5:44 remaining. The Eagles led in shots, 57-8, and in penalty corners, 22-4. Junior goalkeeper Emily Badis had five saves in 52 minutes of action, and freshman Megan McLaughin didn't face a shot in the final 18 minutes for UMW, while Jacqueline Gover had 13 saves and Megan Grimm 14 for FSU. Alisha Salomon had four defensive saves for Frostburg.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host undefeated and fifth ranked Christopher Newport University at 4:00 p.m. in the regular season finale.
